Definition of Ihram
Many people think of Ihram as the two white sheets worn by the male pilgrims. This is a mistake that often leads to wrong conclusions and misunderstandings about rulings. The two white sheets worn by men are “the Ihram garments for men” and not the Ihram itself. The word Ihram in the Arabic language means “entering into a state of prohibition”. In the Fiqh terminology, the Ihram of Hajj and Umrah is the intention (of the Hajj and/or Umrah) by which a person enters the state in which certain things become prohibited on him/her. Issues related to Ihram Following are some issues related to Ihram a) Ruling of Ihram b) Types of Ihram c) Prescribed time of Ihram a) Ruling of Ihram The Ihram is a pillar of Hajj and Umrah. Hajj and Umrah is considered invalid without the Ihram. b) Types of Ihram There are three types of Ihram: 1. Ifrad – A pilgrim enters Ihram (makes the intention in his heart) from the Meeqaat for Hajj only. When he reaches Mecca he performs an arrival tawaaf (al-Qudoom). He can perform a Sa’ee for his Hajj at this time or delay it for after the tawaaf of Hajj (tawaaf al-Ifadhah or tawaaf az-Ziyarah). He does not shave or cut his hair and stays in the state of Ihram till he finishes Rami of the Jamarat-ul-’Aqabah on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah. 2. Qiran– The pilgrim enters Ihram (makes the intention in his heart) for Umrah and Hajj both, together. There is no difference in the rites of Qiraan and Ifraad except that the one who is doing Qiraan has to offer a sacrifice (Hady). 3. Tamattu – A pilgrim enters Ihram (makes the intention in his heart) from the Meeqaat for Umrah only and performs a complete Umrah on reaching Mecca by doing a tawaaf and Sa’ee and shaving or cutting his hair. He then exits the Ihram and remains so until the eighth day of Dhul Hijjah (day of Tarwiyah) when he enters Ihram again for the Hajj only. Thus performing a complete Umrah and a complete Hajj with separate intentions. Scholars are in agreement for the validity of any of the above three though their opinion differs regarding which one is most rewarding; majority considers Tamattu’ as being the best because the Prophet ordered his companions to do so and said - he would have done the same if he did not carry the animal of sacrifice with him. Prescribed Times of Ihram Time of Ihram (for Hajj and Umrah) The time for Umrah is all round the year while the days of Hajj are fixed according to the verses of surah e Baqarah which says that “the Hajj is in the well-known months (i.e. the tenth, eleventh and twelfth month of the Islamic calendar). Majority of scholars consider the month of Shawwaal, Dhul-Qa’dah and first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah as the days of Hajj. London Star Travel providing Cheap Hajj Packages 2018 in UK for all Muslims.
